Matthew heads the Firm’s Litigation Department, where he specializes in complex commercial disputes, EB-5 investment disputes, securities litigation, cross-border disputes, class actions, international arbitrations, intellectual property disputes, employment suits, and internal company investigations. Matthew approaches each case with a rigorous appraisal of the facts and law, and then creatively tailors the litigation strategy to maximize the client’s interests and to minimize costs.

Based on his track record representing parties in the EB-5 field, Matthew was honored as a nominee for Best EB-5 Litigator by EB-5 Investors Magazine. Matthew has made presentations at legal conferences on topics ranging from EB-5 litigation issues to the international enforcement of judgments and arbitration awards.

Matthew started his career as a litigation attorney with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, after having served as a research assistant to Professor David Siegel, author of New York Practice, and a senior law clerk to Judge Carmen Ciparick of New York’s high court, the New York State Court of Appeals. Matthew was a partner for more than ten years with New York litigation law firm Shapiro Forman Allen & Sava LLP. Prior to joining Reid & Wise, Matthew was General Counsel of Afa Dispensing Group, an international product-development and manufacturing company with operations in China, Europe and North America.

Case Highlights:

  • Represented hundreds of EB-5 investors in Court and arbitral proceedings across the country, including in New York, California, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, and Washington.
  • Lead counsel in obtaining Judgments, Court Orders and Settlements awarding EB-5 investors more than $100 million
  • Secured Preliminary Injunction Order freezing Partnership from spending or transferring more than $45 million of investors’ capital
  • Trial counsel in Federal Court action resulting in Judgment in client’s favor in dispute over ownership of property valued at $5 million
  • Lead counsel to Chief Financial Officer of Refco, Inc. in multiple lawsuits arising out of collapse of Refco due to CEO’s $2.4 billion fraud; successfully defended CFO in all lawsuits through demonstration of CFO’s role in uncovering the fraud
  • Counsel to AIG Special Litigation Committee in connection with derivative lawsuits filed in the wake of a series of restatements of the company’s financials; lead counsel investigating particular accounting issues that were the subject of the restatements
  • Counsel to Dutch company in successful arbitration proceeding before the International Court of Arbitration against Anheuser-Busch for breach of a supply agreement and A-B InBev for breach of a license agreement
